Tomás Ó Canainn

Tomás Ó Canainn is one of Ireland's foremost uilleann pipers and founder of and singer with the famous traditional music trio Na Fili. He was formerly Dean of Engineering at UCC before taking over  Sean O Riada’s lectures on Irish music for a number of years.. He has two published collections of poetry and a number of books on Irish music, including a biography of Seán Ó Riada . He has compositions for choir and orchestra to his credit and has composed three masses.
Now retired,  Tomás was elected Ard Ollamh by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Eireann in 2004,  to mark his outstanding contribution to Irish music and culture. He has lectured on many topics including “Music – Art or Science?” and has given performances all over the world.
