Aloys Fleischmann Centenary 1910-2010

Fleischmann Centenary 2010

In January 2010 President McAleese opened the celebrations organised by Cork City Council to mark the centenary of the birth of Aloys Fleischmann (1910-1992), the Irish composer, conductor, scholar, campaigner, organiser, professor of music at University College and Freeman of the City of Cork. The Fleischmann Centenary was planned by Cork City Council’s Arts Office and its Fleischmann Working Group, chaired by Dr Máirín Quill. During 2010, 226 events took place in the four provinces of Ireland and in five countries abroad. Fleischmann’s parents were also commemorated, both in Cork and in the Bavarian town of Dachau from which Fleischmann’s grandfather first came to Ireland in 1879. Fleischmann works were performed at 83 concerts; there were ten exhibitions, twenty-one public lectures, dance performances, a RTÉ lyric fm CD, two radio documentaries and a series of publications. 147 organisations participated. The patrons were the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Micheál Martin; Cork City Manager, Mr Joseph Gavin; the President of University College Cork, Dr Michael Murphy.

Rory Gallagher Music Library would like to thank the Fleischmann family, Séamas de Barra and Patrick Zuk for their contributions to these web pages.Special thanks to Max Fleischmann who digitised photographs and documents for the project.
