About the Archive

The Cork Music Archive is located in the Central Library, Grand Parade, Cork.
Our Music Library has collected local music output since it began, and was renamed the Rory Gallagher Music Library in 2004. Our Local Studies Library houses a unique collection of books, journals, newspapers and more, telling the story of Cork’s history and culture. These two departments are together managing and developing the local music archive. With the proposed new City Library at detailed planning stage, now is an opportune time to create such a resource and give it an appropriate home.

What does it contain?

The Cork Music Archive will collect, document, preserve and make available the musical heritage and current musical output of the city and region: CDs, DVDs, older formats such as vinyl, on 78, 45 and 33 RPM, reel to reel and cassette tapes, scores, books & articles on music in Cork, ephemera such as posters, tickets, reviews etc. The material will feature music recorded and/or issued in Cork, and music made by Cork people, wherever it is recorded.

The Archive will have what might be called a passive side - collecting, documenting and preserving - and a more pro-active side: seeking out items of musical heritage, promoting and supporting archival recording etc., and promoting awareness and enjoyment of Cork’s musics.

In developing the Archive Cork City Libraries are advised by a panel of people who between them cover the full breadth of musical activity - traditional, classical, jazz and contemporary. They will advise on:

  • How the collection is to be properly established and managed, and the long-term preservation of archival materials;
  • The nature of the Archive: Should we seek to upload every sound recording in whatever format, as a matter of course? Will the Cork Music Archive be a web resource from the beginning?
  • Future-proofing: what steps do we need to take to anticipate changes in formats etc?
  • What facilities should we have in the proposed City Library building for the Archive?

Were you in a band? Did one of your family or friends write a song or an album? Are you a fan of any local group? Do you want to see their work remembered?
Cork Music Archive needs your support to build a local music resource for all fans. If you do have any locally produced material (CDs, DVDs, vinyl, books, tickets, photographs, newspaper clippings or any other memorabilia) that you’d like to have preserved, drop it into the City Library, Grand Parade, either the Music Library or Local Studies, whichever suits.

Do it now! Keep local music alive for the future.
