Special Services - Assistive Technologies

We offer a number of assistive technologies and aids as part of the library's service.

Eclipse Text reader
A CCTV reader to assist those who need text magnified. The Eclipse has an extensive feature list that includes an auto focus camera and a push-button overview. Text and background colours can change to suit your needs while line markers and adjustable blanking combine to make reading an altogether more enjoyable experience.

JAWS is a screen reading software package that works with a PC to provide access to software applications and the Internet. With its internal software speech synthesizer and the computer’s sound card, information from the screen is read aloud, providing technology to access a wide variety of information. Designed primarily for those with little or no vision it reads back what appears on the screen.

Large Key Keyboards
These keyboards are useful for anyone with a visual difficulty or for the very young who are learning computer skills for the first time.

Trackball Mice
Appropriate for anyone who has problems with dexterity or with manipulation of the usual type of PC mouse these trackball mice allow greater control with a minimum of movement. As with the Large Key keyboards we offer a child friendly version for the very young learning computer skills.

Transit wheelchair
A transit wheelchair is available on demand for use by anyone who has difficulty getting around the library. Just ask at the main desk or ask any one of the staff
